Searching For The Right Guitar Repair

By Nancy Sanders

Most guitar players will occasionally need their instruments repairing or modifying to suit their playing style. Whether it is an electric model or acoustic these instruments do sometimes suffer from faults and will require attention. If you are searching for guitar repair there are a couple of places to start and also things that can be done by the player to keep instruments in good order.

If you need a reoair the best place to go is to an instrument store in your local area. These shops will either carry out repairs on the premises or send the instrument away to an outside firm. Most stores will also offer an inspection and set up service for players and this can help to prevent serious faults.

There are now also many online repair services available to guitarists and in some cases this option can be more convenient. When you speak with them they will ask you what the problems are and get your instrument collected and taken to them. They will then decide what work needs to be done and contact you with a price for the job. If your guitar has to be taken by a courier it should be fully insured in case it gets lost or damaged in transit.

The price you pay for repairs will obviously depend on what kind of problem it is and how long it takes to fix. Small things such as tuning pegs and cleaning can be done fairly cheaply and quickly. More serious issues such as fret dressing and replacement of hardware will be more expensive and take a little longer.

There are a few things the player can do to keep their instrument in good condition and to prevent damage. Guitars should always be kept in a hard case when not in use and this will keep it safe from knocks and moisture. Each time you play your instrument you should clean it with a dry cloth before putting it back into the case to remove any perspiration which can damage the wood.

Electric guitars will need a certain amount of care throughout their life and it is important to look after them properly. Necks, frets and bodies should be kept clean a free from chips in the wood. Volume pots, tremolo systems and wiring should be checked regularly for wear and tear. Strings should also be changed even if they are not worn and this will help with the neck tension and keep it straight.

Acoustic instruments also need to be looked after by their owners to prevent damage and unnecessary wear. Instruments should be regularly cleaned with the appropriate polish and tuning pegs will need oiling. If you keep your instrument out of its case it should be kept on a stand to prevent it getting knocked over while it is not in use.

If you need to put a guitar in to storage for a period of time there a few things you can do to protect it. Make sure it is well cleaned before casing it and keep it away from extreme changes in temperature. A good tip is to put a spoonful of uncooked rice in the case and this will absorb any excess moisture.
