How To Pick The Right Barber Shaving Gel Or Cream For Your Needs

By Sharon Parker

For many men, shaving their face is something that they do on a fairly regular basis. Some men may choose to shave less frequently or even grow facial hair so that they do not need to worry about that aspect of their personal grooming. Some individuals may need to shave for work and need a good barber shaving gel or other product so that they do not experience skin irritation or rashes. If you are trying to choose a product that is right for you, here are some things to consider.

You may have noticed that men's skincare has come a long way in terms of the number and variety of products that are available. Now, there are many different skin care products and these range far beyond shaving products. Men are beginning to notice that their skin suffers as a result of daily exposure to shaving, to the environment and to dirt and pollutants from their working environment.

You will quickly find that there are several different types of products that are intended to be applied to the skin before a man shaves his facial hair. There are creams, lotions and gels. All of these have different qualities and different ingredients. Certain products will be better for certain hair and skin types as well as the frequency with which a man has to shave.

The purpose behind all shaving products is to provide a lubricating layer that the razor can glide over. Because the blade is not coming directly into contact with the skin it will be less likely to irritate the skin. A good shaving product can also help to reduce the number of nicks or cuts that a man may get on his face as he shaves. It allows the user to get a much closer shave which can help to extend the length of time between shaves as well.

There can be signs that the product you are currently using is not good for your face. If you find that you end up with a lot of nicks and cuts, you may need to pick a product that lubricates your skin more. If you end up with an allergic rash you may find that you need a product that is unscented or meant for allergy-prone skin.

The way your skin feels will be an invaluable tool in evaluating which product is right for you. For example, if you find that your face is dry, itchy or red, or if there is a lot of flaking skin left after you shave, you may need to find a product that is much higher in moisturizing ingredients.

Men who have sparse facial hair or hair that is very fine may be able to get away with using a product that is more of a cream or foam. Men who have more facial hair may need to use a gel as these are generally the highest in emollients and lubricating agents. These can leave a filmy feeling on the skin, though, and may not be the best choice for some individuals.

Finding options to try is not difficult. A good place to start is in a drug store although if you have very sensitive skin you may need to check in upscale men's salons or on the internet in order to find the right product for your skin.
