The Appeal Of A Verdigris Patina

By Minnie Whitley

A protective green pigment is formed on metals like bronze, brass or copper over time. This verdigris patina that forms after years of weathering is very different from the original gleaming copper color. Such a patina can be created today by using products that speed up the natural process. A wide range of such products are available from many local and online stores.

One of the methods used in Medieval times to hasten the process involved burying wooden blocks with copper strips attached in dung for some time. Today, the burying technique is still used. However, nowadays objects are buried in absorbent materials like kitty litter or sawdust once they have been moistened with chemicals. Lovely textures and colors can be created in this way.

The artists in Ancient Greece used to hang copper plates over pots containing hot vinegar to obtain a green crust. They then used this as pigment for their paintings. In eighteenth century France, copper plates were placed in clay pots containing distilled wine to achieve the same result.

Achieving this beautiful effect is not difficult today with the many products on offer. These products are used to create a chemical reaction resulting in the forming of a unique finish without having to wait for years for it to develop. Results of this process can vary considerably, depending upon such factors as the metal used, what chemical is applied and how many layers are added. A blue-green and a blue-black are just two of the colors that can be achieved.

Some of these chemicals come in the form of a spray and others need to be applied with brushes, rags or sponges. The best part of creating patinas is experimenting and producing different end results. Metals all produce different colored patinas. For example, copper develops a blue-green color while bronze turns a blue-black.

Some products can be applied without any heat being used. The metal is coated a layer at a time until the required color is achieved. It is applied with a brush or a rag and some products can be sprayed on. If excess product is applied, it can become thick and chalky, flaking off easily. A tip is to use a small amount at a time, applying it from a disposable container.

Products that need heat for application are often transparent. As heat is used the metal pores are opened, allowing the chemical to bond more tightly to the surface. More care needs to be taken, however, when working with hot metal and flammable chemicals. Gloves should be used as well as protective glasses. Ventilation is important when using any chemicals as fumes may be toxic.

The popularity of this type of finish with designers, landscapers and homeowners means that many such products are available today from numerous outlets, including online stores. These products allow for a touch of rustic charm to be added to any object without having to wait for years. Countless different objects such as pots, statues, screens, doors and even jewelry can be given interesting textures and colors, adding to their allure.
