The Reasons For Installing An Eye Washing Station

By Carolyn McDonald

There are a variety of risks in every job. For chemical and industrial workers, the main risk is chemical exposure. Medical practitioners and laboratory workers also fall into this category. While most exposures are accidental, it is important to be proactive. These jobs require that one is appropriately dressed. Protective gear is the most important. The right shoes and clothing must be on at all times. However, in the case of exposure measures should be taken. The most important measure is the first aid. The eye washing station is one such immediate response measure to safety.

The eye rinsing unit serves to minimize the severity of chemical exposure. It is a point used mainly for the facial exposure. The facility contains liquids that wash away the chemicals while minimizing their impact. The fluid is determined after a job risk analysis. The chemicals in the laboratory or area are analyzed. Their chemical composition is determined. A counter-active fluid is then installed in the rinsing unit. It renders the chemical inactive or minimally reactive.

The legislation requires that certain facilities have these stations. Failure to adherence could result in a shutdown of operations. The building plans submitted to the building approval committee must have facial rinsing units. The number of units should be reasonable to serve the staff present. Also, they must be situated reasonably within reach in time of need.

Workers must be well trained to minimize the risk of exposure. In the case of exposure, the affected individual must react in the shortest time possible. They must know the type of chemical they have been exposed. In this light, they will know the recommended rinsing time required. The minimum flushing time should be between 15 and 20 minutes. That is, however, dependent on the corrosive ability of the chemical. Some may require up to 60 minutes of flushing.

There are a myriad of designs of facial flushing fluid stations. There is no specific standard design. The standard is dependent on the nature of work and the industrial structure. It should, however, be adjustable to suit people of different heights.

Other uses of the eye rinsing stations include cloth washing. Sometime spillage may occur on spots on the protective clothing. To minimize exposure, the spillage must be rinsed off. Then the cloth removed. There are also emergency showers in case of extensive exposure. Some facilities have stations that double up as emergency shower and facial flushing units.

Portable eye rinsing bottles are also available. They are suitable for jobs that allow one to carry them around. They can also be used for outdoor activities. Portable facial washing bottles are the best as there is minimum response time. This way, the damages are minimized if not totally averted.

Individuals running these risky premises must ensure they understand the hazard present in their operations. They must communicate this to their staff. Training is important to minimize the prevalence of such accidents. However, they must understand that eye washing is just first aid. A medical examiner must be consulted after that for a comprehensive diagnosis. There are companies offering legions of safety solutions for such industries. Managers must liaise with them for comprehensive solutions.
